Vagus Nerve Stimulation

Your Vagus Nerve is called the "wandering nerve" as it is the longest nerve in the body that travels down through the front of the body and controls 80% of our Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS). Your PNS consists of the nerves and ganglia outside the brain and spinal cord. It is part of the involuntary nervous system that slows down the heart rate, increases intestinal and glandular activity, and relaxes the sphincter muscles.

Together, the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system make up the autonomic nervous system. The PNS acts as the "brakes" of the autonomic nervous system by normalizing elevated HPA axis, reducing cortisol and the inflammation that comes along with it. It is also responsible for transmitting motor information from the brain to the tissue and organs throughout the body.

Vagal tone (HF) high-frequency is the main indicator of parasympathetic vagal nerve activity/vagal tone health. HF refers to the activity of the vagal nerve, the 10th cranial nerve and a key component of the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system. Those who have a stronger vagal tone can rest, recover, and restore much more quickly. Low vagal activity/tone suggests sympathetic predominance and a possibility of prolonged stress or physical activity.

Dolphin VNS is a safe clinical procedure and could be an effective treatment for stress reduction and vagal tone enhancement.

Health Benefits of Enhanced Vagal Tone:

  • Decreased inflammation: Sends anti-inflammatory signal to other parts of the body

  • Reduced muscle tone: Reduced muscle tension and trigger point tenderness

  • Improved circulation and lymph flow: Sends information from the gut to the brain, which is linked to dealing with stress, anxiety, and fear. These signals help a person recover from stressful and scary situations

  • Reduced pain: Reducing stress reduces pain
